I was recently introduced to Ericka’s handbags through a friend and I was captivated by her clean lines, unique styles and quality craftsmanship. I was compelled to meet her…and although she is in NY and I’m in LA, we made time to get to know one another on the phone. Currently, Ericka is studying Fashion Theory at NYU, completely immersed in New York’s world of fashion and design. Her career is just emerging, but she has big ideas for the future of her business.

Here is some of what she had to say:

What would you say was your inspiration to become a designer? My mother is a seamstress and I remember that I used to fall asleep to the sound of the sewing machine in the next room, growing up. I was always surrounded by creativity and was brought up with a heavy appreciation for old things. I have found quality in antique items and textiles and am inspired by vintage details.

So, is it true that you only use vintage fabric? A great many pieces in my collection are made exclusively with vintage fabric and trimmings. However, if a certain style is in high demand and the fabric with which it is made is replaceable, then I’ll use new fabric.

What piece of yours are you the most proud of? Hmm. I love the zigzag camera bag. It’s a 10″W x 10″ H round size and shape and takes a very long time to make. Long strips of striped cotton are cut on the bias and pieced together by hand…there is something about the process that I love.

Where would you like to see your business go? I would like it to grow to the point where other people are involved in the process… I’d also like to expand from bags to apparel, which is in the works now.

Where are you when you aren’t working? Most likely at an art museum or the movies. I love wandering around looking at art and sitting in dark theatres. I also love simple things like Potlucks with friends and walks in the park.

I asked Ericka to keep us posted on new news for her business…especially her new clothing collection. This small-town girl-turned-New-Yorker is a talented gem. And…you can take my word for it. I know my handbags! I know that we’ll see much more from Ericka in the years to come.
