31 Bits- Paper Bead Necklaces

about1We introduced you to this great group of women a few weeks ago and I had the chance to sit down with them again today. I am so thrilled to bring you more about their story and their designs.

31 Bits began almost a year ago with a few college students in Orange County, CA who saw the need to help the women of a displacement camp in the community of Gulu, Uganda. It was here they found women who created unique paper bead necklaces from 100% recycled paper, but didn’t have an audience who could buy them. They offered to bring their designs to the U.S. where the reception has been remarkable.

I sat down with Ali and Jessie today for an update on their business.  Recently, they were able to purchase a home in Gulu, where at least one of the five of them has committed to live year-round. Ali and Jessie are beginning to think about their trip to Africa in August. They will stay there for a few months to learn the most they can about the culture and the needs of the women in this community.

I get the sense when I speak to Ali and Jessie, that their designers are like family to them. They get so excited to share their stories. And because this blog is about sharing designers’ stories, I feel compelled to tell you a little bit about Molly, the “chief” designer who begins the 31 Bits story.

Molly, 31 Bits’ lead designer is the driving force behind the business. The O.C. team met her almost a year ago and immediately loved her paper bead designs and were drawn to her heart. Over the course of the year, Molly has become a respected mentor and teacher to other designers. As a 47-year old victim of the AIDS epidemic, Molly now helps others who struggle with this disease. She is also an active participant in her church and a leader in her community. Click here to read more about Molly’s story and the many other designers in the 31 Bits family.

When I asked the girls where they saw the future of 31 Bits, they reiterated that their deepest desire was to help these women be successful. And, if eventually they had the opportunity to help women in other countries, they would consider that a success!

You can support their team by purchasing your fabulous paper bead designs on their new online store! Best of luck ladies. Please keep us posted.
