Writing is the communication mechanism that keeps the business world turning. If your writing abilities are below par, it becomes difficult to communicate effectively with your target audience. If your business is web based, you are especially dependent on the written word to get your message across.
Many online marketers outsource as much of their writing and content creation (usually with the use of Thrive Themes) as possible to avoid having to deal with it. Unless you outsource every email, blog post and social media update you have to make, however, basic writing skills and keyword research skills (use SERPSTAT – https://www.trafficsalad.org/serpstat-review to do this) will still come in handy.
My favorite methods that helped me improve my writing immediately.
Step 1: Use an active voice in your writing.
It’s important to get your point across in a way that’s aggressive and on target. People are not persuaded by passivity. The passive voice sounds like this: “Our concern is that that taking this step may possibly be detrimental to your results.” An active way to write is: “This plan will help you increase your profits.” When you read the first one, you get a feeling of vagueness and uncertainty. The latter sentence, by
Step 2: The latter sentence, by contrast is very assertive.
The active voice is much more effective for marketing purposes. It looks much more professional if, when writing numbers, you use the same rules each time. If you start out writing fifteen, don’t suddenly switch to writing 15. This is distracting to the reader. A simple policy to follow is to use numerals for the first 10 numbers and then spell out any that are higher.
Step 3: One practice to avoid is abbreviating million as M, as in 100M people. Write out “million” or “billion” and you can be sure everyone will know what you mean.
Note how the words “affect” and “effect” should be used; an incident may have an effect on the stock market, while the same incident affects stock prices. Learn the difference between “they’re (they are), “their” (possessive- something that is owned/possessed) and “there” (a location).
Step 4: You should also learn how to use “your” vs. “you’re” and “its” vs. “it’s.”
If you use such words incorrectly, your entire meaning will probably not be lost. But even if you can still be understood, you also want to come across as intelligent and professional.
Step 5: You’re on your own with these type of errors, as they won’t automatically be highlighted by your spell checker.
Writers might like to cloak their craft in mystery, but in truth it’s not that complicated. You don’t have to pay someone else to do all of your writing. Writing is an ability that every marketer and entrepreneur should possess.
